The original Frisian homeland was the coastal region from the Old Rhine at Katwijk to the mouth of the Ems. In the period of the migrations Angles and Saxons seem to have passed through Frisland. English place-names indicate that a number Frisians accompanied the invaders. Some Angles and Saxons may have stayed behind and settled in Frisland.
After about 500 a Anglian and Frisian cultures began to blend in Frisland. The Frisian language has been preserved. It is is taught in the schools of Frisland and recognised by the government of the Netherlands as an official language.
