Tocharian was spoken 500-1000 CE in the Tarim basin.

Tocharian documents dated between 500-700 CE are in Berlin and Paris. These were found in the late 19th century in the region surrounding Turfan (Tocharian A) and Kucha (Tocharian B). Tocharian is an independent branch of the Indo-European family not closely related to its neighbour, the Indo-Iranian. It has affinities with the "centum" (Western) branch of the family.

Who actually spoke Tocharian is disputed. The speakers, judging from the internal evidence of the language, started out in contact with Celtic, Italic, Balto-Slavic and Greek speaking populations. On their way east they spent sufficient time with Finno - Ugric and Altaic speaking populations to absorb a large number of words.
