Anderitos is generally
identified with the Saxon shore fort at Pevensey. The name
derives from a British prefix
ande "great" and
ritu 'ford'
giving the meaning 'great fords'.
The Old English called the fort
Andredesceaster and transferred the name to the forest as
Andredesleage later
Andredes Weald, the Weald. The
Notitia Dignitatum records a
numerus of Abulci, raised around Avila in Spain, here.
