Stutfall castle, near Lympne on a
hill overlooking the Romney marshes. Lymn is the old name for
the East Rother that once fell into the sea at Rye. It gave its
name to the Saxon Shore fort
Portus Lemanis and to the
town.
The name of the river is from the
old British base lemana which means 'elm'. Lac Leman is
from the same root. A numerus of the Turnacenses is listed here in the Notitia Dignitatum.
