Walton castle stood near the estuary
of the Deben on a site now completely eroded by the sea. The fort
was the site of the first East Saxon bishopric created by the
royal family the
Wuffingas (630). No trace remains of the Roman
or the British names for the fort.
This might indicate that the site
had passed into royal hands early in the migration period. Here
we are close to the East Saxon royal burial ground in the Deben
valley and the Sutton Hoo site.
