The bishoprics preserve to a large extent the late Roman town names. These names are interesting because in general it is the second element of the name (the Celtic element) that remained in use. Thus we are given a glimpse of place-names and tribal names much older than the bishoprics. The vast majority of the names are formed with the Latin suffix "ensis".
