Trajan (CE 98-117) closed the gap between Main and Neckar by completeing the Odenwald limes. Excavation shows that the first wooden towers and earth forts were built around CE 100. From the Main at Wörth, the line followed respects the relief, avoiding deep valleys and high points. From the fort at Schlossau a straight line is taken for 35 kilometers to the Neckar. Trajan also organised civil administrative units behind the frontier in the Odenwald sector and behind the Neckar.
