Gaulish, Lepontic, Galatian and Celtiberian are grouped to form the Continental Celtic.

Gaulish is by far the better known. Celto-Iberian has only recently been recognised as a distinct Celtic language. Place-names and names of natural features in central and eastern Europe indicate the presence of Celtic speakers prior to the Germanic expansion. This unknown "eastern" Celtic and other Celtic varieties were certainly spoken in prehistoric times but almost no information concerning them has been recorded.
