Lepontic is evidenced by inscriptions found in an area centred on Lugano and embracing the Lago di Como and the Lago Majiore region of northern Italy.

These are either single words or short phrases. No connected texts have be found in Lepontic.

Early incriptions in Lepontic predate the occupation of the Po valley by the Gauls (ca 400 BCE). Late Lepontic survives untill the subjugation of the cisalpine Celts by the Romans. There is sufficient evidence from the inscribed material to separate Lepontic from both Gaulish and the Gaulish dialect used in cisalpine Gaul.
